Facility Dogs For Schools

Facility Dogs for Schools

Facility dogs in schools become more than a resource. They become part of the everyday school community. From greeting students in the morning to being present during stressful or challenging moments, these dogs help create an environment where students and staff feel supported, connected, and ready to learn.

Puppies Behind Bars places highly trained facility dogs with select schools to support staff and student wellness and engagement. Our dogs are raised and trained from puppyhood in correctional facilities, where they receive extensive socialization and develop a unique responsiveness to people. By the time they are placed, each dog is calm, confident, and prepared to work in busy school environments.

These dogs can:

  • Encourage positive social interactions
  • Help students settle and refocus during the school day
  • Provide comfort during difficult moments
  • Strengthen connections between students and staff
  • Contribute to a more welcoming and supportive school environment

We place a limited number of dogs each year and partner with schools that are committed to integrating a facility dog into daily routines and maintaining a safe, supportive environment for both the dog and the school community.

Each school designates an approved handler, while the dog remains a shared resource for the broader school community.

Next Steps: Before applying, we ask that interested schools review our Information For Schools to Consider, which outlines the responsibilities and commitments required for a successful placement.

School Facility Dog Application

Application Process
  • Within two weeks, we will notify you upon receipt of application via email and will request any other documentation we need.
  • We will conduct an initial review of your application to determine your eligibility. Although the application process usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete, depending on the number of applications currently being processed and the number of dogs we have available, we may decide to place the application process on hold until we have openings in an upcoming training. At that time, we will inform you of the expected wait time until we reactivate your application. If we decide to proceed with your application, we will contact you to schedule a phone interview and an interview via video conference.
  • After speaking with your references and head of your administration, we will inform you of our decision.
  • If you are selected, you will be placed in our next 14-day “Team Training.”
